Why Facial Cleansers Are Better Than Soap

Posted on: June 16, 2011

If you have ever wondered if you could benefit from using a facial cleanser instead of soap, you are not alone.  There are still many people around the world today that are still using their soap to wash their faces instead of a facial cleanser.  If these people were to use a facial cleanser instead of soap for a couple of weeks, they might just change their mind about using soap.  There are actually several reasons to use a facial cleanser on your face instead of your regular bar of soap.  In the following article, we will review some important reasons that you should use a facial cleanser instead of bar soap.

First and foremost, soap is very drying.  There is probably no dermatologist on the planet that would suggest someone using bar soap over facial cleanser unless it was a special bar of soap they were using.  Soap is fine for the rest of your body because the rest of your body is not as sensitive as your face.  It is not recommended to be used on the face because it contains harsh detergents, various fragrances and deodorants as well.  Most soaps contain all of these ingredients.  Facial cleansers, on the other hand, are formulated to be used on the delicate skin of your face.  Facial cleansers will almost always have a low pH, which will make it more acidic.  This acidic tone to the facial cleanser will not upset your skin's acid coating.  Soaps, of course, have a higher pH, which makes them more alkaline.  Any high alkaline products will successfully irritate your face.  Anyone that has dry skin should make it a habit to use facial cleanser instead of soap.  A facial cleanser cream is an excellent selection if you have dry skin.  Facial cleanser creams are formulated to help restore your skin's natural moisture balance.  When it comes to fragrances, you should not use any soap or facial cleanser that has fragrances.  Soaps and facial cleansers are both well known for containing fragrances, so you want to watch out very carefully for these.  Almost all facial skin types are sensitive to any fragrances.  Bar soaps more than facial cleansers contain fragrances, but plenty of facial cleansers contain them, too.

There are some bar soaps that are manufactured to be used on a person's face.  These bar soaps will have a low pH and will be gentle on your skin.  The only bad thing about these bars of soap is that they are usually not strong enough to remove the dirt and oil build up from just an oily complexion.  Facial cleansers on the other hand are also mild but still have the power to remove the dirt and oil build up from an oily complexion and from a day's worth of activities outside.  Even though the facial cleanser is cleaning properly, it is not drying out the skin like the bar of soap would.  If you have any type of sensitive skin, bar soap will only irritate your skin.  Soap is fine for the parts of your body that are not your face.  Soap on your face is just a bad idea when there are facial cleansers to be used.
